Don’t just do it for the money

A lot of people are entering the worlds of blogging and freelance writing as mechanisms to make money quickly and easily. Those people will soon realize that blogging and freelance writing are not quick and easy routes to making money. Blogging and freelance writing are not built for you to get rich quick. These occupations require desire, discipline, and dedication. You must have a passion for writing to succeed in this field. You may not want to hear this but you literally have to be willing to work for free to be truly successful at this. This can apply to any occupation. If your current job is not something that you find fun and if you would not be willing to do it for free, you are in the wrong occupation. That may be hard to swallow, but this mindset is imperative for many successful businesses. The people who are the happiest and most successful while working are the people who don’t view their job as work. Their job is what they love to do; it’s their passion.

If you don’t have a passion for writing, deciding to make a career out of blogging or freelance writing may not be the correct path for you. In fact, it is the perfect recipe for failure. Building a solid readership is contingent upon your level of passion for writing, the degree of exposure you are creating for your writing, and time. If you have a passion for writing, you won’t worry about the growth rate of your readership. A stagnant of even declining readership will most likely have little to no effect on you. Over time, if you are persistent about maintaining your passion and increasing your exposure, you will eventually build a solid readership. At that point, you can start determining how to monetize the web traffic you have created for yourself. If you don’t have a passion for writing, you primary concern is already the growth rate of your readership and making money. A stagnant or, even worse, a declining readership will have a devastating and detrimental effect on you. You will have no motivation to continue because you are only concerned about making money and you don’t have a passion for writing.

A passion for writing separates the bloggers and freelance writers who succeed from those who fail and quit. The reason is that when seems like things are going down hill, time is dragging on, and readership levels remain stagnant or decrease, only one thing can motivate you to continue: a passion for writing. If you don’t have that passion, you will most likely give up when things aren’t going well.

Although some bloggers, like Darren Rowse from Problogger.net, are examples that making a full-time income from blogging is possible, blogging and freelance writing should not/cannot be your primary job. Blogging and freelance writing are means for expression. Writing has to be one of your passions, but what you are blogging and freelance writing about is your true passion. What you are blogging about (your true passion) should be an indicator of what your primary occupation should be. Unless you are blogging about blogging (like Darren Rowse), you shouldn’t be expecting a primary form of income from blogging. Your primary income should be coming from your true passion, whatever that may be. Blogging and freelance writing (your secondary passion) can be used as a means to generate a secondary form of income to supplement (not replace) your primary form of income.

Thanks for the post and give us a overview of another aspect of freelance writing. I do agree with your thinking that most of the freelance writers are willing to earn more and quickly. They have to be an expert in this field and not to rely on any one client.
